THIRTEEN FESTIVAL PAMPHLETS ON THE SEVILLE CELEBRATIONS HONORING THE IMMACULATE VIRGIN

Seville. Festival Pamphlets.

Seville, 1761-1763.

THESE THIRTEEN FESTIVAL PAMPHLETS DOCUMENT THE 1761-3 CELEBRATIONS IN SEVILLE honoring the Immaculate Virgin, newly established as the patroness of Spain and its colonies in 1761 by King Carlos III. They record prayers, processions, poetry (including a poem to be read in multiple directions), services and events. The lavish decor is meticulously described: imported flowers and fabrics, plaques, effigies, monuments, altars, gems, emblems and AN OPTICAL ILLUSION USING A SERIES OF MIRRORS TO CREATE THE ZODIACAL HOUSES FOR SPECTATORS TO GUESS WHERE THE TRANSIT OF VENUS WOULD APPEAR (I). The pamphlet bound first includes a folding woodcut map of the festival site, which the approbation notes is AN UNUSUAL INCLUSION FOR BOOKS OF THIS GENRE. Another (IIX) contains SIX PAGES DEPICTING THE REBUSES AND WORD PUZZLES FEATURED WITHIN THE DECORATIONS  with their solutions following. Two festivals celebrated architectural renovations, the first (VII) of the Capuchin convent’s church buildings (destroyed by a fire during the 1761 festivities) and the second (IIX) of the Archconfraternity of the Coopers Guild’s chapel and hospital for sick and disabled members. A QUARTER OF THE TREATISES MAKE REFERENCES TO THE AMERICAS, including sourcing silver from Potosí.
In good condition (some browning, old adhesive, paper flaws, some smudges, I, IV & XIII shaved close and affecting two lines of text in XIII, one bifolium loose (VI), slight worming), bookplate of the Junta Delegada Del Tesoro Artístico (dissolved 1939) with the name T’serclaes, likely the bibliophile, writer and historian Juan Pérez de Guzmán y Boza, duque de T’serclaes de Tilly (1852-1934), whose collection was dispersed by his heirs.
Contemporary speckled and brushed vellum (some wear, some separations in text block), manuscript title on spine, evidence of four leather ties.
