Descrizione Delle Sculture, Pitture Et Architetture…Di Pescia.
Bologna, at the Sign of Thomas Aquinas 1772.
64p. 8vo (182 x 115 mm.).
Modern vellum, manuscript spine title, preserving contemporary block-printed wrappers (old repairs).
First Edition of the first handbook to the art of Pescia (Tuscany) and its dozen dependent villages. The text discusses canvases in churches, hospitals and the local literary academy, while the lively footnotes contain anecdotes, aesthetic judgments and citations. The work is sometimes credited to Luigi Crespi (1708-79). Crespi’s dedication to Ansaldi, however, reveals that Ansaldi wrote it at Crespi’s request. A very good copy (scattered foxing, small stain in one blank margin).
