Psalterivm Davidis.

Paris, G. II and N. Clopejau 1658.

8vo (186 x 120 mm.). 235 [r. 249], [manuscript pagination 250-256]p. and [3 letterpress]p. and [3 manuscript]p. Text in two columns, PRINTED IN RED AND BLACK THROUGHOUT, Annunciation title engraving.

CONTEMPORARY GILT RED MOROCCO (minor restoration to spine and corners), outer frame of two geometric rolls, rules, floral pointillé tools and dots, richly decorated inner frame consisting of a center- and corner-piece design of dots, pointillé sprays and blooms surrounding a small central medallion reading SR. IAQVINE (front) and DV CHASTELIER (rear), gilt spine with rules, geometric rolls and sprays, board edges glit, all edges gilt; text ruled in red.

THIS BESPOKE PSALTER BELONGED TO SISTER JACQUINE DU CHASTELIER. In it, stressed vowels are marked by the printer to aid those less secure in their Latin to proficiently sing or read the text aloud. The three additions to Jacquine’s devotional include the Litany of the Saints (manuscript, 3p.), “Jonah’s Prayer” (manuscript, 1p.) and the forty-eight-stanza hymn “Jesu dulcis memoria” (letterpress, 3p.). The page numbers for the Seven Penitential Psalms have also been added in the same hand at the end of the index. I have yet to discover the import of the irregularly placed marginal manuscript majuscule and minuscule letters. This is the second copy recorded (the other, Lausanne). In good condition (three quires browned, one marginal paper flaw, one leaf with letterpress punched through the leaf), stamps of the Précigné Petit Seminaire (closed c. 1905).
