Catalogue De Tableaux, Sculptures, Desseins, Estampes, Livres, Et Autres Objets Curieux Du Cabinet De M ***.

Paris, for L.-A. Jombert et al. 1776.

12mo (181 x 103 mm.). 94, [2 blank]p..

Late 19th-century black morocco backed marbled boards, gilt-lettered spine title, top edge red, mostly uncut; once stabbed.

A poignant dispersal, this catalog records the personal possessions of the author, bookseller and printer who long specialized in books on art, architecture and the military sciences. In 1775, nearly blind, Charles-Antoine retired to Saint-Germain-en-Laye, ceding the business to his son, Louis-Alexandre. Charles-Antoine compiled several catalogues raisonnés, including that of his close friend and collaborator Charles-Nicolas Cochin (1715-90), whose works dominate this sale. In all, more than fifty paintings, some twelve hundred drawings and ten sculptures were auctioned. The two hundred lots of books reflect his professional activity (art manuals, illustrated books, views, monuments…) and his personal interest in contemporary music (well over eight hundred scores). These are followed by his violin, viola, cello and a flute made by Thomas Lot (1708-87). The sale closes with reams of printing paper, vases, gardens benches, fishing nets and bookcases. I have not located a copy in American collections. In nice condition (a few spots).
