CRIME & PUNISHMENT

Sommario Della Bolla Di N.S. Papa Pio V. Contra I Bestemmiatori, Sodomiti, Simoniaci….

Bologna, G. Rossi 1566.

4to (203 x 149 mm.). [ii], [6]p. Woodcut papal arms on the title.

Old yellow wrappers.

Pope Pius V (r. 1566-72) directed these prohibitions at lay persons and clerics. The former — censured for disrupting church services, begging in or around churches, swearing impious oaths, mishandling the dead — received fines from a few scudi to one hundred ducati, a month in prison, a hole in the tongue and/or service on a galley. If unable to pay, the poor were to be beaten.
The familiar list of infractions for clergy suggests “reform” still lay ahead — the buying and selling of church offices, illicit commerce, bestiality, concubinage, etc. These crimes earned varying degrees of corporal punishment, degradation of status, defrocking and, for high officials, loss of land and income. I have located one example outside Bologna. In good condition.
