MOCKERY & INDECENCY

La Gibeciere De Mome Ov Thresor Dv Ridicvle.

Paris, J. Gesselin 1644.

8vo (158 x 103 mm.). Engraved title of Momus as a court jester, [x], 475 [r. 479]p.

Jansenist crushed red morocco (Trautz-Bauzonnet), gilt-lettered spine, all edges gilt over marbling, blue silk marker.

Only Edition, early issue, of this GRAB-BAG OF OVER FIVE HUNDRED ANECDOTES, JOKES, PARODIES AND WITTICISMS. Excoriator-in-Chief of the Gods, Momus spares no one or thing — Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, noble, physician, priest, sex worker, bookseller, religion, art, national origin, penis and breast size…. Even the custom of numbering entries goes quickly haywire and is abandoned. In good condition (a few spots, one word poorly inked), a bookseller’s ticket partly removed from the front flyleaf.
