?First Edition. Addressed to women, the four sections treat the history of women’s costume, the role of taste and elegance in beauty, contemporary hair styles and the essentials of color theory, applying the principles of painting to clothing and fashion. The opening remarks recognize that women dress to please themselves, and the historical essay begins with the Egyptians and closes with the perfumes most in demand at present (Eau de lavande, Eau de milles fleurs…).
The second essay discusses jewels, pearls, fresh and artificial flowers, gems, how the cut and drape of clothing complements a woman’s figure, accessories, recent periodical articles on the latest trends, age-appropriate choices, ways to emphasize the bust and neck lines, casual and formal wear, etc.
The third essay (50p.) concerns HAIRDOS WITH OBSERVATIONS KEYED TO THE FIGURES ILLUSTRATED ON TEN PLATES. The styles are named and their virtues and purposes enumerated. With the rage for the “antique”, citations to catalogs of ancient gem collections inform the reader on sources of inspiration, while those leaning toward the Gothic can turn to the wives of Henry VIII of England (pp. 119-20) as models.
The final section explains THE IMPORTANCE OF COLOR IN DRESSING SUCCESSFULLY. Eight color plates guide the selection of clothing that harmonize, marking the wearer as chic and elegantly understated.
The number and order of editions of this work remain unresolved. The present four-page publisher’s catalog at the end should more firmly date the present printing. Two American libraries hold an edition (Columbia, Rice). In good condition.
