BOOKS FOR (REALLY SMART) TODDLERS

De re vestiaria, Vascularia & Nauali: Ex Bayfio. In adolescentulorum, bonarum literarum studiosorum, gratiam.

Paris, Charles Estienne 1553.

8vo (162 x 108 mm.). 189, [26]p. Italic type (roman for French and headings, scattered Greek; the trilingual index has Greek, roman for Latin and italic for French), open floriated and historiated woodcut initials, EIGHT TEXT WOODCUTS, a woodcut Estienne title device (Renouard 295; Schreiber 8).

17th-century limp vellum, flat spine with a faded manuscript title.

In the mid-1530s Charles Estienne abridged these three scholarly works — on ancient clothing, on containers and receptacles and on boats — to amuse and instruct. The first two were prepared for the three-year-old Jean-Antoine Baïf and the third for Charles’ six-year-old nephew, the future printer Henri II Estienne. This last, on watercraft, is recognized as FIRST ILLUSTRATED CHILDREN’S BOOK. Here the author gathered them together and indexed their Greek, Latin and French keywords in a single alphabet.
This copy belonged to the Aix lawyer and antiquary Pierre-Antoine Rascas de Bagarris (1569-1620). He signed the title at Aix on 1 June 1619 and recorded his paid price of 13ß.4. One of the founders of numismatics, he was placed in charge of the royal collection of coins and medals at Fontainebleau before moving to Paris to become Director of Medals and Antiquities under Henri IV and draft the first inventory of the royal collection of paintings. In good condition (lightly foxed), illegible stamp of Camille ???.
