Muestras que escribió para la instruccion de Da. Teresa St Marcq y Jordá.

Palma de Mallorca, Antonio Espina 1812.

4to (232 x 189 mm.). [1 blank], [8], [1 blank] leaves. Manuscript in Spanish in a single cursive hand completed on rectos only in double-rule frames, six to fourteen lines per page.

Boards.

Autograph manuscript by the professional calligrapher. He published a small format introduction to elegant handwriting appeared in the last years of the 18th century (Arte calygráfico o elementos del Arte de escribir para uso de los niños, unknown to Bonacini). It has two plates, respectively illustrating the formation of lower case letters and capitals.
In the Models Espina devotes five leaves to one cursive style, detailing morphology and the size and angle of the letters. The final two leaves present writing samples enclosed in decorative penwork frames. The texts show how to integrate minuscules, majuscules, loops, strokes and flourishes to create a most attractive page. The first text is an excerpt from Cicero translated into Spanish on the professor’s role in forming his students. The second admonishes the reader to honor and respect parents and elders and is dated 18 April 1812, suggesting Espina worked on the Models over three days. The title, with its dedication to Teresa St. Marcq y Jordá, displays more elaborate styles — broken, outline and checked upper and lower case letters, as well as a more traditional running hand. In good condition.
