Drilkonst, Of Hedendaagsche Wapen oeffening.

Utrecht, J. Terwen 1668.

8vo (150 x 92 mm.). Etched and engraved title with war weeds, [x], 96p. and SEVENTEEN ETCHED PLATES in two series with four figures on each plate.

Marbled paper over boards (spine reinforcement strip), edges sprinkled blue.

First Edition of this officer’s pocket manual for musket and pike exercises, which also covers the command of these troops in battle. The intaglio illustrations demonstrate the positions and movements of individual soldiers handling each weapon. The balance of the work typographically presents thirty-eight field maneuvers for pikemen and musketeers (ps and ms indicate each armed individual) and explains their execution. Terwen’s advertisement in the 28 April 1668 issue of the Haerlemse Courant helps pinpoint the Drilkonst publication date. The work was reissued in 1672. I have found one example in the U.S. (Met Museum). Drill Master for the City of Utrecht, THE AUTHOR SIGNED THIS COPY IN MANUSCRIPT AT THE END OF THE PRELIMINARIES. Our copy represents a previously unrecognized state (priority not established; fingerprint supplied on request). In good condition (a few plates shaved on the outer margin, small hole in the inner edge of the intaglio title).
