Dissertazione Sull’ Origine Del Giuoco Del Ponte Di Pisa.

Pisa, G.D. Carotti 1785.

4to (238 x 176 mm.). 15p.

CONTEMPORARY BROKATPAPIER WRAPPER with birds and flowers (rubbed).

First Edition of this learned treatise on the annual Pisan contest of strength fought on the Ponte di Mezzo, over the Arno. A maritime lawyer and local historian, Fanucci traces the game’s roots to ancient times, while the “modern” version seems to have taken shape in the 11th century, evolving according to contemporary customs to a less violent and dangerous contest between armed teams representing the north and south sides of the city. In the 18th century, and today, the object is to overpower the opposition by pushing a heavy cart into its territory. At the time of writing, players argued over which side represented the more beautiful women as they competed. I have located one other copy (Florence). In excellent condition, contemporary note N 8 in red ink on the title.
