THE FIRST STEP?

La Farce de Maistre Pierre Pathelin, Avec Son Testament A Quatre Personnages.

Paris, C.-J.-C. Durand de Sugères 1762.

8vo (176 x 116 mm.). 158p.

Recent blue pastepaper boards, original blue wrappers preserved, gilt-lettered black paper spine label, uncut.

This copy shows bibliophile and scholar Jean-Pierre-Agnès Parison (1771-1855) apparently preparing a new edition and bibliography of the best French medieval farce, based on the unique copy of the text’s only dated 15th-century edition (Paris, Germain Bineaut 20.XII.1490; now BnF Rés. Ye. 237). His close reading of the incunable before him yielded differences in word, phrase, orthography and word division, which he recorded in the manner of a professional proofreader.
TO THE PLAY’S 1600-LINES, HE MADE SOME 1500 CORRECTIONS. He modified the title to match Bineaut’s and transcribed his colophon at the end. The two laid-in manuscript leaves preserve his notes, i.a., on editions of Pathelin in the library of the duc de La Vallière. Parison focused on the Farce: he left the Testament and Ballades untouched (pp. 115-58).
Parison assisted Brunet in correcting the first four editions of the Manuel de libraire. Brunet, in turn, paid tribute to his friend in the lengthy biography prefacing the sale of Parison’s library. In good condition, Parison’s note and inscription on the verso of the front wrapper, bookplate of comte Emmanuel d’André (b. 1937).
