Contemporary vellum over paper boards (soiled).

A most painterly baroque emblem book: second edition. Delicately composed and executed, the plates address friendship and love, sacred and profane. One copy of this edition in the U.S. In good condition (light blank outer marginal stain, two outer margins neatly repaired, one cut in early color), two contemporary manuscript notes in French. Title inscription dated 1656 of Jean Lubriat (1634-1715), royal counselor to the king at Chartres, slightly later flyleaf inscription recording the presentation of this copy to Marie Marguerite de Fromont, early 19th-century bibliographical note.
