Ad I: The Haarlem printer and typefounder’s art collection, which informed his interest in the history of illustration. The first lot is Jan van Eyck’s 1437 painting of “Saint Barbara Seated Before her Tower”; in 1769, Enschedé commissioned and published an actual size engraving of this painting. Among the other 2200 lots are paintings, portraits, drawings and prints by, i.a., Bruegel, Rembrandt, Dürer, Caravaggio, Raphael and Holbein. Enschedé’s scientific instruments, ivories, coins and curiosities (such as a hippo tooth) close out the sale. No copy in the U.S. In good condition (minor marginal worming on one leaf).

Ad II: The private collection of books, drawings and prints of Italian, French, Flemish, German and Dutch masters formed by the Leipzig university art historian and professor. He used his prints for his dictionary of artists’ marks (1747), and he also wrote a book on Lucas Cranach for a never-realized painting history series. “Christ’s conception of art history — not a series of artist’s lives but as a stand-alone intellectual genre — marks the emergence of art history as a genre” (Sorenson). He is also considered the founder of archaeological studies in German universities. One copy in U.S. collection. In good condition, four pages with manuscript corrections.
