CHÂTEAU DE FONTAINEBLEAU, s.n. 1646.

Small 4to (174 x 125 mm.). [vi], 49, 47-49p. (see below) and SIX FOLDING TABLES PRINTED ON BOTH SIDES, TWENTY-FIVE TEXTS WOODCUTS, one full-page table, four typographic text diagrams.

Contemporary vellum over soft paper boards (soiled, rear panel stained).

ONLY EDITION OF THE FIRST BOOK PRINTED AT FONTAINEBLEAU: fugitive. The author dedicated the book to the seven -year old Louis XIV and had it printed in the famous castle. The standard reference books and bibliographies are silent on printing at Fontainebleau.
Based on the ingenious use of the fourteen-column two-sided folding tables, this illustrated arithmetic aids merchants, surveyors and military commanders. The first half is devoted entirely to commercial transactions — prices, discounts, interest, rule of three, etc. The calculations necessary for various troop deployments, supply disbursements and soldier pay schemes come next, and the final portion applies geometry to commerce (wine barrels, textiles, etc.). The author was Mathematics Professor and Royal Land-Surveyor at Fontainebleau.
In this copy, the final quire (two leaves) is present in in uncorrected and corrected states. I have not located an example outside France. In nice condition (some light finger soiling), contemporary title inscription of Rivot notaire ?Bonnivaux (?Bonnevaux, eastern France), 19th-century book ticket of Marchal, a magistrate in Bourmont.
