Paris, P. Le Petit 1661.

12mo (143 x 81 mm.). [xxii], 474, [1], [19]p.

Contemporary gilt-ruled crushed red morocco ?by Antoine Ruette (corners bumped), central arms of chancellor of France Pierre III Séguier (O-H-R 271,4), gilt spine and title, marbled pastedowns, all edges gilt.

Only Edition. This is the first appearance in French of On the Flesh of Christ and On the Resurrection of the Body by “one of the founders of political and religious thought in the West” (OCD). Tertullian composed the essays to combat Gnostics’ denial of Christ’s real humanity (I) and the literal resurrection of the dead on judgment day (II).
An advisor to Mazarin and an early member of the Academie française, Louis Giry (1596-1666) translated the texts and compiled the subject index. Pierre III Seguier (1588-1672) was a founder of the Académie and had Ruette bind nearly all his books in red morocco. This copy later figured in the collections of Swedish collectors Thore Virgin (1886-1957, bookplate) and Rolf Wistrand (d. 1974, bookticket). In excellent condition (spots on two leaves), some lower edges uncut.
