Paris, Louis Fordrin [1723].

Large folio (456 x 322 mm.). ETCHED AND ENGRAVED TITLE, ETCHED AND ENGRAVED DEDICATION, TWENTY-EIGHT ETCHED AND ENGRAVED LEAVES — fifteen full-sheet cuts, one double-page cut and three large large multi-folding plates — each made up of four sheets; one letterpress leaf (privilege). The plates are by Hérisset, Josselin, Fonbonne and Bouillon after Fordrin’s designs.

Contemporary mottled calf (worn, a few neat repairs, minor stains), spine and red morocco label gilt.

First Edition of this ironwork pattern book. Fordrin presents his ideas for chandeliers, grilles, railings, lattice gates, balconies, garden ornament, staircases, signs, lamps and A SPECTACULAR COMPLETE CHOIR-SCREEN IN THREE SECTIONS — EACH COMPOSED OF FOUR ENGRAVED LEAVES (719/850 x 897/1008 mm.; 28.3/33.5 x 35.3/39.7 inches). From 1703 he trained under family members at Versailles before coming to Paris, where he worked on the choir-screen at Notre Dame, among other commissions. He chose his publishing partner carefully, confident that Royal Engraver Gaspard Duchange would have access to the best clients; though, the smithy already enjoyed the patronage of the dedicatee, the duc d´Épernon (1707-43), whose half-brother was the richest man in France. This copy is of an intermediate issue with all but five plates before numbers; in the ?19th century three small related cuts (one signed Babin) were trimmed to the plate mark and inserted in the gutter on stubs (165 x 175 mm.). In good condition, hexagonal blue-printed label stencil-lettered pn on the front pastedown.
