“One of the richest cabinets…of prints, copperplates and other monuments of art” (Guigard, tr.), the duke’s collection had books on, i.a., natural history, optics, music, pyrotechnics, New World voyages, numismatics and the Low Countries, as well as liturgical manuscripts — two in Turkish and one in Church Slavonic. For forty years Governor of the Austrian Netherlands, Charles fostered the arts, and “assembled a large number of machines and scientific instruments” (State). A good copy, some lower edges uncut.
