HE LIVED IN MISERY & DIED IN POVERTY

L’Apollon Francois, Ov L’Abregé des Regles de la Poësie Françoise. Par L. I. L. B. G N.

Rouen, J. Courant 1674.

Half-sheet 18mo (167 x 105 mm.). [iix], 39p. Woodcut arms of the three dedicatees (brothers) on the title.

Vellum over thin boards (slightly bowed).

Only Edition. Rife with mythological misdirection and unwarranted references to the Muses, the bigoted failed dramatist’s prosody manual breaks into verse (sadly his own and mediocre) “to present today the gallant youth of both sexes” a way with words that accords with Love (p. 7, tr). After a fulsome (read, tiresome) tour of the literary virtues of verse for pitching woo and elevating one’s social and intellectual standing, he sets out the rules followed by samples from his own pen — quatrains, sixains and sonnets predominate but some topical and occasional pieces run to eighty lines. His acrostic warns against law suits.
The three plays he managed to get staged flopped. Another so violently attacked Protestants that it was banned before performance or publication and he imprisoned (Les Hust, the derogatory term in Normandy for members of the denomination). I have not located a copy in the U.S. (that at the Sutro library, with 74 pages and lacking the title-page, is not this text). If there was a (posthumous) 1684 reprint, no copy now survives. In good condition, a few margins partially uncut.
