Only Edition of this Spanish festival book documenting the coronation celebration in October and November of 1701 in the Catalan capital for King of Spain, Philip V (1683-1746) and his Queen, Maria Luisa of Savoy (1688-1714). Grandson of Louis XIV and born at Versailles, Philip spoke only French, some Latin, a little Spanish and no Catalan. His official functions were rife with ceremonial miscues and awkward silences, and he would not be recognized by the Grand Alliance as the Spanish monarch until the end of the War of the Spanish Succession.
Nevertheless, his hosts put on a heck of a party.
This describes the ephemeral architecture, obelisks, pyramids, statuary, painting cycles, emblems and tapestries mounted in his honor. Trade guilds and amateurs competed for the most splendid displays. The intelligentsia and university students composed works for the literary contests. Parade floats of giants, dragons and the famous Barcelona mulassa rolled in the streets, and the religious orders adorned outdoor altars with iconography peculiar to local devotions. Nightly fireworks followed morning hunting excursions, and costumed balls and dances begun in the evening ended at sunrise.
The book also records the poems and speeches — most in Catalan — delivered before Philip and Maria Luisa, as well as two sermons for the translation of Saint Oleguer (d. 1137). The first discourse discusses, i.a., CORTÉS, PIZARRO AND THE NEW WORLD.
The book was apparently never finished and was issued without a formal title. The text of the first part breaks off at p. 264 in the middle of verses describing Spain’s influence over Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas. The second part begins with the first sermon, and the second sermon (p. [113]) has a divisional title — the only title of any sort in the book. Palau suggests that printing ended abruptly or could not be completed, and the book circulated as here.
Neither ABPC nor RBH records a copy at auction: I have not found another example outside Spain and France. In good condition (some leaves lightly browned, one quire misbound).
