Maximes Et Loix D’Amovr. Lettres, Billets Doux Et Galans, Poëisies.

Paris, O. de Varennes 1669.

Half-sheet 8vo (152 x 95 mm.). [vi], 132, 24p. A heart-shaped woodcut title vignette.

Gilt-paneled coral morocco (Niédrée), corner fleurons, gilt arms of Pierre-Adolphe du Cambout, marquis de Coislin, spine and title gilt, all edges gilt, green silk marker.

Only Complete Edition and second overall of this witty collection of prose and verse, no doubt intended to be read aloud and passed hand to hand for the entertainment of both women and men. There are dialogs, a mix of contemporary and Renaissance verse forms, epistolary samples, choice sweet nothings and the nine rules of love (pp. 122-30). Lachèvre suggests the compiler was le sieur Valdavid.
Our edition compresses the 167-page text of the 1667 first printing, also issued by Varennes, to 132 pages, a twenty per cent reduction in paper. Though the dedicatee remains the same, the duc de Montausier, the dedication’s conclusion reflects the altered political climate. THE FINAL TWENTY-FOUR PAGES OFFER FIVE NEW PIECES of the same tenor, except one, titled “Against Marriage”. Though these last three quires are signed independently of the main text (a-c), they share its paper stock. I have located one complete and one defective (lacking the 24p.) example of this edition in the U.S. and no copy of the preceding printing. In good condition, 18th-century inscription Ex-libris R. Dairou D.D. Boullongne, bookplate of French senator Elzéar Pin (1813-83), modern gilt leather bookplate of Pierre de Saint-Victor.
