“A CONTEMPORARY MANIFESTO” — CALLAWAY

Jérémie, Poëme En Quatre Chants…Dédié A Madame…Ouvrage orneé de Figures en Taille-douce.

Paris, G. Desprez 1771.

8vo (198 x 130 mm.). [ii], intaglio title, [iii]- xvi [17] 18-126, [2]p. and SIX ETCHED AND ENGRAVED PLATES (numerous artists after Pierre Le Clerc), superb typographic headpieces from small fleurons, etched allegorical title.

Contemporary gilt-ruled red morocco (rubbed), corner fleurons and GILT CENTRAL ARMS OF POPE CLEMENT XIV, flat spine covered in blooms, stars, circles and foliage, gilt-lettered title, all edges gilt, green silk marker.

First Edition of this “thinly veiled attack on Voltaire and the philosophes” (Calloway), paralleling the Enlightenment mockery besetting contemporary French Catholics and the lamentations of the prophet Jeremiah. The artist explicitly adopts “the author’s plan and ideas” (p. VII, tr.), by, for instance, making the Bastille the backdrop for the illustration of the high priest striking Jeremiah. Printed on heavy paper, this copy was bound for Pope Clement XIV (d. 1774), whose encomium of the author appeared in the second edition (1772). In nice condition, bookplate of American philanthropist and bibliophile Jayne Wrightsman (1919-2019).
