Retrospective pink patterned boards, manuscript spine title.

Only Edition, the only surviving printed description of the hydraulic steam pump devised by Brückmann and Johann Heinrich Weber (c. 1680-1755). Artillerists, cartographers and engineers, the authors called their invention the Elementary Machine because it employed earth, water, air and fire in its operation. They claimed it would continuously lift water from mines for twenty-four hours fueled only by a fathom of wood and also recommended its use for canals, tunnels, irrigation, fountains, water supply, fortifications and bridges. They stressed their pump’s safety and promised increased profits for private and governmental mining operations. They specifically chose not to illustrate the machine to protect their intellectual property, but the designs could be had for the low, low price of 100,000 Reichstalers (operators were standing by). Brückmann and Weber’s 1715 experiments piqued the interest of Leibniz, who requested a description of it. I have not located a copy in the U.S. In good condition (some soiling, lower blank corner lightly stained).
