GUIDING LIGHTS FOR YOUNG & OLD

Sacrarvm Antiqvitatvm Monvmenta.

Antwerp, C. Plantin 1577.

8vo. [xvi], 95p. and [28 blank]p. THIRTY-NINE FULL-PAGE FULL-FIGURE ENGRAVED PORTRAITS of leading men of the Old Testament BY JAN SADELER AFTER DESIGNS BY CRISPIJN VAN DEN BROECK AND PETER VAN DER BORCHT, full-page engraved portrait of the author.

CONTEMPORARY PAINTED BLUE VELLUM over flexible paper boards (rubbed), evidence of four green linen ties, red edges.

Only Edition of this Old Testament handbook and iconography, pairing the Andernach Humanist’s Neo-Latin verse commentary with Sadeler’s superb engravings, based on the author’s instructions. Here Hillessemius offers Old Testament heroes, kings, prophets and patriarchs as models for both children and adults. For him divine spirituality most powerfully penetrates man through his eyes, which daily confront bright virtue and dark sin. This has been considered both an emblem and a coin book.
The owner had fourteen blank leaves bound in back to preserve the funeral oration (then in the Bibliotheca Palatina and apparently never printed) honoring Hillessemius by the Archbishop-Elector of Cologne, Truchsess von Waldburg. The project got as far as the title.
A good copy (slightly browned, one margin repaired affecting one shoulder note, one blank corner repaired); 1896 presentation from Martin Burke on the flyleaf, inscription of D.L. Cumming, book ticket of Robert Fullerton.
