CONTEMPORARY PRESENTATION BINDING of gilt-decorated red paper over boards, gilt-lettered green paper onlay on the front panel, A MADEMOISELLE ISIDORA PETIET G. LATTANZI D.D., gilt-ruled spine, all edges gilt, marbled pastedowns.

Only Edition of this collection of Petrarchan sonnets, occasional verse, epigrams and diplomatic letters presented to the 13-year-old Isidore Eugénie Petiet (1788-1869), whom the author tutored in Italian. Likely for private distribution, the poems celebrate Napoleon’s victories, the beheadings of Charles I and Louis XVI, love, flowers, England…. A prolific author and a colorful and controversial journalist, Lattanzi abandoned the priesthood, had scandalous sexual liaisons and married twice. I have located one copy of Pastimes outside Italy. In fine condition.
