LAUGH TO LEARN

Anweisung zu einer, zwar nicht vernünftigen, aber doch modischen Erziehung der Kinder.

Erfurt, G.A. Keyser 1780.

8vo. XXXII, 208p. Etched allegorical title vignette of crayfish and a schoolhouse (signed R).

Contemporary mottled sheep (rubbed), spine and title gilt, red edges.

First Edition. Arguably the pioneering educator’s most influential work, the Instruction offers parents valuable principles and practices for raising their children through some seventy funny and satirical stories, each with a specific heading (fostering mistrust, discouraging dainty eaters, encouraging fear of nature…). On the last eight pages, Keyser appends a fixed-price stock catalog with a handful of English books. Two copies in the U.S. (one from us 16 years ago). In good condition (very light foxing), one untrimmed corrner folded in (témoin), title stamp of the Holstein Court Library.
