”MORE BARBARIC THAN THE BARBARIANS, WE HAVE NOT DEIGNED TO PRESERVE THE PRECIOUS REMAINS OF THE PAST” — THE AUTHOR

Les Recherches…Svr…La Ville De Vienne. Premiere Partie [all published].

Lyon, for C. Baudrand in Vienne 1659.

Gilt-ruled polished tan calf (Simier), gilt spine and labels, all edges gilt, purple silk marker.

First Edition, second issue. Chorier examines the archaeological remains of Vienne, a Gallo-Roman town just south of Lyon and home to some of the best-preserved Roman ruins outside Italy. He describes its amphitheater, statuary, aqueducts, leper colony, prison, churches, monasteries, fortifications, fountains, cemeteries, gardens, hospitals, palaces and libraries and records many ancient inscriptions. At the close, he laments that contemporary neglect had already led to many losses. (By the following century, the amphitheater had been destroyed.) In good condition (title repair touching the imprint), some edges uncut; from the library of bibliophile and silk merchant Nicolas Yemeniz (1783-1871; Catalogue (1867) 3498).
