“RARE” — MAYER

Gallerie von Teutschen Schauspielern und Schauspielerinnen der ältern und neuern Zeit.

Vienna, I. Nepomuk Edler von Epheu 1783.

8vo. xxii, 265, [1]p. Etched medallion bust portrait of “Abraham Peiba” on the title.

Late 19th-century pastepaper paper boards (worn, spine faded), manuscript-lettered paper spine label.

Only Antiquarian Edition (repr. 1910): “one of the important sources of information about eighteenth-century German actors” (Brandt). Ranging from a few sentences to several pages, THESE NEARLY FOUR HUNDRED BIOGRAPHIES — ONE HUNDRED SIXTY-ONE WOMEN AND TWO HUNDRED THIRTY MEN — span three centuries, though most of the players were active during the 18th century. These lives document where and when the actors performed, their physical attributes and memorable characters, including J.F.H. BROCKMANN’S PIONEERING HAMLET OF 1776, THE FIRST MOUNTED IN GERMANY.
Purportedly written by the otherwise unknown Portuguese Jew Abraham Peiba (1640-1782!), the Gallery has been attributed to soldier, government official and poet J.J.A. von Hagen (1742-1807) and to the dramatist, librettist and librarian J.F. Schink (1755-1835), who issued a supplement the same year. A later issue lacks the title portrait medallion. I have located three copies of our issue in the U.S., just one of those with the supplement. In good condition, stamp of the Berlin Cadet Corps on the flyleaf and title, woodcut bookplate  and stamp of Helmut Wiemken (1926-2004), the literary historian and translator.
German and Dutch Theatre, 1600-1848 ed. Brandt 146; Mayer, Bibliotheca viennensis 4452 (Schink) & 8565 (Hagen); Holzmann & Bohatta, Deutsches pseudonymen-Lexikon 4971; VD18 10347119.
