Contra monachos proprietarios plurimi egregorum virorum tractatus. Johannes. O. Cist. d. 1517 CURRIFEX.
Contra monachos proprietarios plurimi egregorum virorum tractatus.

Contra monachos proprietarios plurimi egregorum virorum tractatus.

Paris, for E. and G. de Marnef [1502-3].

Small square 8vo (133 x 94 mm.). [ii], [73], [1]p. Most initial spaces with printed guide letters, a woodcut Marnef title device (Renouard, Marques 713).

18th-century French provincial binding of gilt red morocco à la Du Seuil with outer and inner rule frames and corner fleurons, front panel gilt-lettered DE BELOMBRE, spine and black morocco label gilt (label chipped, base of spine damaged), marbled endleaves, all edges gilt.

FIRST EDITION OF ALL SIX ESSAYS from the high and late Middle Ages on the worldly entanglements besetting monastic clergy. This is the collection’s only printing.
Strictures of custom, canon law, the Church Fathers, ancient Greeks and the Bible frame the varied discussions centered on real and moveable property and money. They also concern witchcraft, fornication, adultery, luxurious clothing, fine horses, satanic converse, homicide, hymn singing, food, drunkenness, hollow ceremony and the opening of monasteries.
In chronological order, the contributors are Saint Peter Damian (1007-72), two pieces by Pierre Cantor (Le Chantre; d. 1197), Jean Tinctor (d. 1469), Jean de Bomal (c. 1400-77) and Currifex (Wagenmaeckers; d. 1517), who apparently edited the whole (placing his own essay first). He may well have financed the closely set heavily contracted small type publication, as it has no introductory matter or dedicatee. Long considered an incunable, it is now assigned to 1502-3, based on the state of the device. In good condition, ?from the library of the Revolutionary Jacques-Nicolas Camusat de Bel(l)ombre (1735-1809) ?or an 18th-century member of the Gayot de Bellombre family, pencil acquisition note dated June 1930 of Georges Petit de Grandvoir (1878-1956).
