FIRST EDITION, THE FIRST INTEGRAL TRANSLATION OF THE WORKS OF VIRGIL INTO FRENCH and the first complete translation into Alexandrine verse. Dedicated to Henri III, it was twice reprinted and secured the reputations of brothers Robert and Antoine Le Chevalier d’A(i)gneaux, minor Norman nobility, who were born within a year of each other (1541 and 1542, respectively) and who died a few months apart (1590). Two examples in the U.S. In good condition (tiny inner marginal worming, extreme lower outer corners with a pale stain); from the library of Jean d’Yse de Saleon (1669-1751), Archbishop and Viscount of Vienne with his bookticket dated 1750, presenting this copy to the Jesuit college in Vienne.
