Only Edition of this account of true crime — the assault against and subsequent ransom of twenty-year-old Estienne Portail. On 25 March 1628 a band of Protestant brigands from Revel, in southwestern France, attacked a Toulouse butcher and his son Estienne. Though wounded, the father escaped, while Estienne was held for cash. The kidnappers pushed for his hanging, but the rope failed thrice. Then the villagers turned against the outlaws, killed one and returned Portail to Revel to protect their revenue. Eight days later the ransom was paid, and Portail was sent back to Toulouse. I have found two other copies , all in France. In excellent condition.
