Contemporary blind- and gilt-decorated binding made of two pieces of pigskin over bevelled wooden boards (worn, rear panel stained), panels alike with central arms and the date 1720, the front panel lettered RITVALE above unidentified abatial arms, the rear panel with W in the scutcheon below an eagle, two brass posts and clasps (one clasp replaced).
First Edition of the first Norbertine Rituale. This contains the full liturgy for the seven sacraments, the order of service for exorcisms and other special ceremonies and the chants with their music. THERE IS ALSO A CHAPTER ON RECORD KEEPING IN CATHEDRALS AND PARISHES.
Even after the Council of Trent, the Order of Prémontré retained its unique rite. Upon his election in 1668, the Order’s Abbot-General, Michel Colbert, sought to standardize in a single volume the Order’s various rites, to complement the the work already accomplished for their Missal, Breviary and Processional. Two copies in the U.S. In good condition (one quire lightly browned, four quires with text just touched by worming), a couple leaves uncut.
