First Edition: Planat’s first book. This spiritual directory was steadily read into the 19th century, especially in Spain and the Spanish New World. Planat offers a meditation for each Sunday of the year on topics ranging from tonsure, vestments, hospitality and consecration to food and wine (pp. 77-84), the cleric’s place in society, his speech, Bible study and legal immunity. The final fifty pages offer a partly schematic guide to celebrating the Mass followed by citations to each week’s biblical reading. I can not account for the overwhelming popularity of the Rule in Spanish-speaking lands — pragmatic conservatism?
This is also Barbut’s first book. He issued thirteen editions over thirty-one years, all but one religious. It is dedicated to Pierre de Bonzi, soon to be Bishop of Béziers. In good condition (one blank corner gone, a few minor stains), canceled manuscript title inscription of Sebastian ?Lin[n]es of Châtillon (?Drôme) dated 11 May 1680.
