Paris, the Artist 1703.
Two volumes in one. Oblong 8vo. 7 leaves and 7 leaves. Together, FOURTEEN ENGRAVINGS by Pierre Bourdin, including the title-pages (these signed by Guérard)..
Contemporary calf (repaired), gilt spine and title, edges sprinkled red.
Well over one hundred finely executed designs for watch and cosmetic cases, snuff boxes, keys, mirror and painting frames, wall decoration, jewelry, textiles, furniture and architectural ornament, gold and silver table service, gun stocks, moldings, decanters, clock pendulums…. It was much copied in Germany, where the images of tobacco smoking fit popular conceptions. A third suite appeared five years later and is missing in nearly all sets, including those at the Bibliothèque Nationale, the Institut National de l’Histoire de l’Art and Vienna. Indeed only a few recorded examples include Book Two (one in the U.S.). In modest condition (thumbed, soiled, spotted), bookplate of Edmond Lincoln.
