Much of modern day library practice — acquisitions, conservation, curatorship and accessibility — is found Naudé’s Advice on Establishing a Library. He advocates building a “universal library” — as far-reaching in scope with as many different viewpoints as possible. He stresses the importance of the physical care of books, recommending binding styles and shelving conditions. He argues for a strong bibliographic reference collection with which to curate the collection, as well as for two complementary catalogs of the library: one of authors and one of subjects. Most importantly, he recognizes a library’s potential depends on its accessibility, which should be freely open to the public for study.
All is for naught without an experienced professional — “ON THE LIBRARIAN’S MEMORY AND LEARNING REST THE ESTABLISHMENT, ENRICHMENT, ORGANIZATION AND USE OF THE LIBRARY” (Barbier et al., tr.).
Naudé composed this in his mid-twenties at the beginning of a distinguished career during which he served as librarian to, in turn, Cardinal Bagni, Cardinal Barberini, parliamentary président de Mesmes (to whom the present work is dedicated), Cardinal Richelieu, Cardinal Mazarin and Queen Christina of Sweden. Under Naudé’s care, Mazarin’s collection grew to include over 40,000 volumes and became the first public library in France. Naudé practiced what he preached.
A good copy, bookplates of John Arthur Brooke and Michel Dubos; an early 19th-century note on the front flyleaf places this copy in Empress Josephine’s library at Malmaison.
