JUST FOLLOWING THE DUKE’S ORDERS

Sum[m]arium facti est.

[Milan], c. 1454-56.

Folio (298 x 204 mm.). MANUSCRIPT. [2], [1 blank], [1]p. In a single Gothic hand (hybrida currens), 33 lines per full page, contemporary docketing on the final verso.

A single bifolium, edges uncut.

This Summary of the Fact sheds new light on the accusations, interrogations, torture, false confessions, executions and suicide tarnishing a botched criminal trial overseen by Milan’s chief criminal judge, Antonio Rangoni.
An accused thief implicates another man, Isegrino, whom Rangoni has strappadoed until his arms break. Isegrino confesses and names two more accomplices — his own torturers! They in turn are interrogated and tortured until they admit guilt. Despite unease that all are innocent, Rangoni sentences the four to death, causing one to preemptively hang himself “out of desperation” (tr.). This legal document is likely part of the subsequent internal investigation of Rangoni’s brutality. In good condition, paper watermarked with the Visconti arms.
